Alloy 20 or carpenter 20 is an alloy that is classified under super austenitic stainless steel. Well-liked for general corrosive service, this stainless steel grade is highly rated by most Alloy 20 Tube suppliers. Primarily this alloy was developed as a means to counter corrosion problems associated with sulfuric acid. Unlike regular stainless steel and steel grades, the UNS N08020 Tube displays superior resistance to sulfuric acid, particularly when placed in aggressive environments, which could cause failure of the more conventional austenitic alloys.
Apart from sulfuric acid, Alloy 20 Seamless Tubing exhibits good resistance to general corrosion when exposed to applications that contain chlorides or acids like sulfuric acid, nitric acid & phosphoric acid. During the production of the alloy, some amount of niobium is added to it. Niobium has a stabilizing effect on the Carpenter 20 Tubing against sensitization as well as from the resultant decay by intergranular corrosion. The weldability properties are also superior of the Alloy 20 Welded Tubes. They could be furnished in any one of the following conditions - solution annealed condition or stabilized annealed condition or in an annealed condition. Testing the ASME SB 729 UNS N08020 tubes for elongation, yield and tensile strength is an important requirement. Moreover, each specimen or component belonging to the ASTM B729 UNS N08020 are subjected to tests like the hydrostatic test or a nondestructive electric test. The ease in fabrication, with excellent resistance to corrosion in combination with its magnified mechanical properties, makes the Alloy 20 Tubing a valued addition for applications like heat exchangers, Chemical and petroleum processing equipment or for several process-based industries.
